| The Pros and Cons of Dedicated Servers |
Most websites start out on a shared server—a single computer that hosts many different websites, yours included. But if your site is growing, you may want to consider a dedicated server—one machine that only handles your web sites. If you’re considering switching to a dedicated server, here are some pros and cons.
Pros:
- Your site won’t slow down if another website on your server starts getting a large amount of traffic.
- You can select the sites that share your dedicated server, or keep it exclusively for your sites—you have the control.
- You select the operating system and control panel.
Cons:
- With dedicated servers, you’re responsible for everything: backing up your site in case it goes down, finding and installing updates, and programming.
- The time and money you commit to your website are much greater than they would be with a shared server. In addition, you must handle a greater amount of technical demands.

A dedicated server could be just what you need if your website is growing. If you are realistic about your company’s needs and abilities, you’re probably ready to make the leap.
